I’ve known for a while that I wanted to start a kindness website. But the event that actually triggered me to finally enter the unexplored territory (for me) of building a blog was this: We’ve had our share of snow in the northeast this past winter, the biggest blizzard occurring on February 9-10. It was the Saturday after that blizzard that I went out shopping and clearly everyone else was doing the same thing. People were surely stricken with cabin fever, were tired, achy and grumpy from digging themselves out for days, had errands to run and were in need of food. It took me about 30 minutes to travel less than a mile, and when I was leaving the store, I couldn’t get back out of the parking lot because of the traffic trying to get into the parking lot. Making matters worse was that lanes were still closed because there were mountains of snow piled up everywhere. What struck me as I was quietly sitting in traffic was that it was taking even longer to move along because people left and right were allowing other people to cut into the traffic in front of them. This was quite an extraordinary phenomenon – these cabin fever victims found it in their hearts to be kind – in a major traffic jam! I was happily impressed and SO inspired, and I obviously wasn’t alone. It was likely one person who kicked off this phenomenon by letting in one car; the next person was then motivated to do the same, thus creating this amazing kindness domino effect. At that moment, I experienced an aha moment. How cool would it be to have an inspirational message pop up in your view while you’re stuck in traffic? Three simple words – essentially the golden rule – only kindness matters! A few days later, I placed an order for 1,500 static cling window decals.
So here they are! If you would like to spread the “only kindness matters” message on your own car and spread the decals around to your friends and family to help grow this quest, you can purchase them through PayPal. They are sold in lots of 10 for $10, including postage. You simply go to your PayPal account and click on the “send money” tab. If you don’t have a PayPal account, you can follow the easy steps to open an account. It just takes a minute. In the box that asks for the recipient of the money, type: wdswmn@verizon.net. I will then receive an e-mail from PayPal telling me that you have made a payment and it will contain your mailing address. (Please make sure your mailing address is current.) I will then mail you the number of decals you desire. If you do not have a PayPal account and prefer not to open an account, you can e-mail me at wdswmn@verizon.net and I will provide you with information for paying by check. Please type the words “kindness decals” in the subject line of your e-mail. Let’s all make our cities and towns a kinder place in which to drive!
Below is a picture of the window decal that was born out of the traffic jam! Please note that the decal consists only of the three words “only kindness matters” and does not include the bottles. This is merely an example of the decal in my kitchen window.

Many thanks to Earth Angel Jeanne for spreading the word and the ONLY KINDNESS MATTERS decals around the York County Courthouse. It has sparked a flurry of great interest. Jeanne is the courier in my office. The way she does it is by putting a decal on the plastic pouch that she carries in her arms – so that everyone can see it. Whenever someone inquires about it, she gives them a decal. Now people are ordering them by the bunch. My next target is the Mayor’s office – with the goal to make York, PA the “kindness capital” of the country!
