This page is devoted to those “earth angels” who bless many of us simply by doing what comes natural to them – being kind. Below are some brief stories that I wish to share with you. Please take the opportunity to tell us about the earth angels in your world.
DIANE… In my mind, Diane is the epitomy of kindness. She even has a sweet, angel-like smile. One day in early fall, a small group of us was enjoying a Saturday shopping outing in PA. When we were checking out at the register of a local gift shop, Diane was buying some locally made chocolates known as Wilbur Buds. Diane lives in MD and she wasn’t familiar with these fabulous Wilbur Buds. The cashier told her what they were and commented to her that Wilbur Buds were her favorite chocolates and that Diane had made a good choice. When she paid the cashier for her purchases, Diane motioned for us to wait for just one more minute while she went back and picked up a second bag of Wilbur Buds. After she reached the register and paid for her chocolates, she handed them to the cashier and said “here, these are for you, have a wonderful day!” The cashier was ecstatic to the point of literally jumping up and down because she was so ecstatic over Diane’s thoughtfulness. As we were all walking out the door in laughter, the cashier said “you have no idea how much you just made my day, thank you SO much.” Diane’s kind act set the tone for the rest of the day and, of course, she shared her bag of Wilbur Buds with all of us. This is a story about Diane being Diane – this is what she does – this is why I call her an earth angel!
KAY… Kay is a happy little lady that I know from a former job. Her title is “office services clerk.” That means that she does everything! She makes all deliveries; she plans, sets up and cleans up luncheons and meetings; she keeps the office properly stocked, carefully tending to everyone’s specific wants and needs; and she does it all with a gentle smile. She is an angel! But that’s just what she does at work. Ever since Hurricane Katrina happened, Kay and her husband, along with their church group, have been traveling from PA to Biloxi, MS, twice a year to help the families who were brutally afflicted by the ravages of the storm. That’s how Kay has cheerfully and effortlessly spent her earned vacation away from her job for the past four years. When she’s not working and when she’s not rebuilding houses in Biloxi, Kay takes care of her aging and ailing mother; does additional volunteer work at church; does volunteer work for her husband’s ambulance company; spends time with her kids and grandkids; and rescues animals from the SPCA – well, maybe her husband does that part. Earth angel? Without a doubt!

Let me tell everyone about another Earth Angel. Her name is Lesa (pronounced Lisa) and she is one of the kindest, most generous people I’ve ever met. Her job requires her to inspect for City Code violations and so she not only has to go to some pretty rough places, but she has to issue citations and sometimes condemn a building. You’d think the folks in her territory would not like to see her coming. But, that’s not the case…she’s so caring and concerned that the residents know she’s going to try to help them find solutions–especially when she finds a family struggling to survive in dilapidated and unsafe housing. She will bring pictures to me and other co-workers in the affordable housing section and see if we can help find these folks a safe and decent place to live.
She is always trying to help animals, too. She has rescued countless animals as she goes on her rounds. Her current zoo consists of 3 cats and two dogs–all of whom were rescued from various unpleasant situations. The two dogs were rescued after Katrina left them homeless, frightened and very leery. One of the dogs is still terrified of water but Lesa is gentle and calm with her. One of the kitties had been nearly killed under the hood of a car and Lesa rescued him and paid all the vet bills. He’s a happy boy now…even if slightly “brain-damaged.”
She’s a good friend, too. Always caring and always giving and she tries to make things a little brighter for those around her. After I lost my daughter to cancer three years ago, Lesa was one of the ones that cared enough to come around and check on me after the first few weeks. She would come over and let me cry and talk and then, when I was able to go back to work, she would come by almost every day to see how I was doing.
She’s a kind and gentle lady, my friend Lesa, and most deserving of being known as an Earth Angel.
Thank you so much Gwen. You are so sweet and kind. You are my special friend. I am proud of you and the way you rescued and gave a forever home to Maisy. I think you will find many blessings come your way for your kindness.
